MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 221

Welcome to the 221st edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday. I've posted three clips this week -- these three clips share something in common. To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of each of the three mystery jam clips, and answer what the three clips share in common. Each person gets one guess per day, with the second “day” starting after I post the hint -- each guess should contain three songs / dates, and a guess at the commonality. No sharing or trading of answers is allowed. A hint will be posted on Tuesday if necessary, with the answer to follow on Wednesday. The winner will receive an MP3 code good for a free download of any show, courtesy of our friends atLivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. Good luck!

Hint:

Answer: For only the 15th time in 221 MJMs (6.8% W%), the Blog wins!

The Blog's record has now improved to 15 wins, 179 outright losses, and 26 hint-aided losses (plus thevoided MJM 214). The guessing crew was on the right track, but ultimately fell short. The picture of the Lidocaine ointment was a nod to the topical nature of this week's MJM -- note that it says "For Topical Use Only" on the label. The topic itself is Mr. Rogers Nelson, also known as Prince Rogers Nelson; this week's jams were played at shows during which Phish covered The Purple One: 12/31/98 Antelope("1999"), 12/30/94 Tweezer ("Purple Rain"), and 8/28/93 Stash ("Purple Rain"). Come back next week for MJM 222, where we'll play for two download codes.

Haven't seen you comment in some time, so in case you haven't seen the new format, you should know that all three jams share something in common (beyond all being played by Phish). Thus far we've had commonalities such as "All jams played in Canada," "All jams segue into Tweezer," and "All jams were Chalk Dust Torture played at Dick's." In other words, if you truly found one of them, you're well on your way...

Oh I've been around the whole time ucpete! I just haven't been able to guess any in a long time (and haven't had a Monday off in a long time)!

Must say you've been doing a great job with your selections since you took over (not that the last person was bad or anything. Far from it.)!

Sweet, glad to hear it; and thanks for the kind words! The positive feedback and the weekly crowd are what keep me going :)

Don't think you've got the commonality, and it's the second clip that makes me think that. I've not figured it out either, but my curiosity is piqued. See ya'll tomorrow?

A head start on everyone else when it comes to identifying the three clips?
, comment by zipriderson
zipriderson what's the record on number of hints given for any one MMJ? We're going to need a few here i am sure.
, comment by bushwood_a_dump
bushwood_a_dump Wow, this one is a peach.

I've trailed a few theories down the rabbit hole, and each has failed.

That third clip kills it. Nothing lines up from that era.

I'm not licked yet...

melt_the_tek9 wow the first jam is siiiiiickkkkkkkkkkk

That's all I got
, comment by Imasil
Imasil I keep getting lost on like 3 different tracks of thought thinking I'm making progress but having no luck. That being said, scrolling through songs on phishtracks on my phone is hard and phish.in doesnt have sound for some reason. I hope someone hits it, this is a good one.

PhreePhish My brain is fried for today.

On to the Wednesday hint!
, comment by Svenzhenz
Svenzhenz Prince = Mpls.
Lidocaine? = Golgi Apparatus? Squirming Coil? Bathtub Gin?

On to the next hint...
, comment by uctweezer
uctweezer I can't tell if you guys are joking or not, but there is no next hint. Tomorrow before 10 AM PT I provide the answer, the blog wins, and we play for two codes next week... unless someone figures it out in the next 11 hours...
, comment by Imasil
Imasil I wanted to bring that up haha, thats ok though, potentially 2 codes to win next week :D

On to the next hint...
Desperate attempt to prevent blog win: Lidocaine is used as numbing agent in pregnancy. So, Prince's birthday? 6/7? Only I couldn't identify any jams from the many 6/7 shows (90, 95, 09, 11, 12).

Prince's birthplace? Minneapolis? I got nothing.

That first jam is sick.
, comment by andrewrose
andrewrose Maybe I'm wrong about the pregnancy thing. Dental work? NO2? Again, I got nothing.
, comment by bushwood_a_dump
bushwood_a_dump Okay, hail mary with my ramblings thus far...

Lidocaine = Sample in a Jar
Mr Rogers = Cavern (ie take care of your shoes)
Nelson Muntz = Ha Ha Ha

some date crosschecking, all 3 of those songs were only played once, 6/22/95. And I can't map anything with those songs preceding, or following, anything of note.

And then the trail goes cold. And put my head back in the vice clamp.

Having said all that, my gut says they all sound like the beginning of the outro to The Coil.

, comment by andrewrose
andrewrose PRINCE ROGERS NELSON
, comment by garcia17
garcia17 derp. Prince fits for the third clip for sure. I cant find the other two
, comment by WayIFeel
WayIFeel Ok. I got no clue but something has to to throw out some picks. Here's what I got

12/3/99 Limb by Limb
6/16/95 Runaway Jim
7/3/95 Bowie (even though at the tail end of the jam i'm hearing Reba)

no clue what the hint is other than I was thinking it had to do with It's Ice but still no idea. I also was sort of convinced all the jams came from Summer 95.

Can't wait to see what the jams end up being.

Nice win @ucpete

I'm going to post the answer when my wife gets home and I head to work, which is sometime around 9 AM PT... good luck!

andrewrose My guess:

, comment by garcia17
garcia17 I was (am?) almost positive the commonality was shows containing Purple Rain. The second two jams both fit the bill. I've searched high and low for the first clip but can't seem to find it. I even checked 12-31-98, which has 1999. It sounds to me like it is from 98-00 era, but Deer Creek 99 is the only show during that time period with Purple Rain, and I'm almost positive the clip is not from that show.

I'm starting to think I'm missing something with the commonality. Can't figure out how the Lidocaine ties in.
, comment by zipriderson
zipriderson I think the Lidocaine is a reference to the Princess Bride. Hence the clue, Prince Rogers Nelson.
, comment by garcia17
garcia17 My final guess:

1) BOAF 7-25-99
2) Tweezer 12-30-94
3) Stash 8-28-93

Crunched for time so I only checked a few of the songs, unfortunately not Antelope. Nice picks on this one.

Thanks. Yep, not bad at all for only finding out what the hint meant this morning! I thought I was being sneaky by having two NYE run MSG shows in there, and thought that folks would get tripped up even further on that, but I don't think anyone got the first jam... I guess the third jam does scream 8/93 though!
, comment by andrewrose
andrewrose Wow, oddly enough shows containing Purple Rain was one of my first hunches, and the first jam sounded like 99 to me. But after listening to the BOAF and not being able to pinpoint it, I gave up. I checked 12/31/98 too. On Monday. Everything but the Antelope. D'oh! Image

standard Excellent MJM! And I thought the hints were fine. Although they led me to search shows containing Purple Rain + simpsons signals. Was also looking for N02 because of the lidocaine. Also looked for Minneapolis shows. Oh well!

I thought this hint was one of the best ones MJM hints I've seen. Got me going in the right direction looking at shows w/ prince covers while not even coming close to giving it away and I still wasn't able to find the jams.

If you didn't at least get the Rodgers and Nelson pics being a reference to Prince then this hint just wasn't for you.
, comment by bushwood_a_dump
bushwood_a_dump I wasn't even in the ballpark, but I tip my hat to this one. Well done. You left just enough bread crumbs to follow a path. See you next week.

Thanks for that. I could have made the hint more obvious, but the point isn't to give away the answer, it's to point people in the right direction -- and in the wake of Prince's death, I didn't think it was too crazy to leave a somewhat cryptic hint. Then again, Mr. Rogers Nelson isn't exactly NSA level shit. Considering numerous folks figured out the Prince connection, and one guesser got two of three, I'm going to assume that @JMart meant that the hints weren't good, they were great. See you next week!
